Born December 4, 1949, in Hannibal, Missouri, Barry Michael Kemp earned a B.A. degree in communication and theatre arts from the University of Iowa in 1971, where he first began writing plays. His career has since centered around television scriptwriting and production.   Kemp broke into the television situation comedy scene at Paramount in 1978. Initially a writer, he also became executive script consultant for the ABC hit series Taxi. Ten years of work on Taxi brought industry recognition of his talent with Writer's Guild of America award nominations in 1978 and 1979, and a 1980 Emmy award nomination for outstanding writing in a comedy series.   By 1982, Kemp was an executive producer for MTM Enterprises, penning the pilot for In Security and creating The New Bob Newhart Show -- later Newhart -- early in his tenure there. The world of Egyptology and archaeology mourns the loss of Barry Kemp, Director of the Amarna project and one of the most influential archaeologists of our time, who passed away earlier this week.

As stated in a special announcement issued by the Egyptian Museum, Turin, Kemp profoundly redefined and transformed the discipline of Egyptian settlement archaeology while training a whole generation of Egyptologists and archaeologists in the classroom and on excavation.

Born in 1940, Barry J. Kemp completed his formative studies in Egyptology at the University of Liverpool (1962). Soon after his graduation he joined the University of Cambridge where he taught throughout his life, acquiring Professorship in 2005. Meanwhile, he was working at Tell el Amarna, in Egypt, directing the survey and archaeological excavations at the remains of Pharaoh Akhenaten’s capital, for the Egypt Exploration Society since 1977. Barry John Kemp, CBE, FBA (14 May 1940 – 15 May 2024) was an English archaeologist and Egyptologist. He was Professor of Egyptology at the University of Cambridge and directed excavations at Amarna in Egypt. His book Ancient Egypt: Anatomy of a Civilisation is a core text of Egyptology and many Ancient History courses.[1]

Life and education

Kemp was born on 14 May 1940 in Birmingham.[2][3] He studied Egyptology at the University of Liverpool, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in 1962.[3][4] He died on 15 May 2024, a day after his 84th birthday.[5][6]

Academic career

In 1962, Kemp joined the University of Cambridge as an assistant lecturer.[7] He was promoted to lecturer in 1969, Reader in Egyptology in 1990, and made Professor of Egyptology in 2005.[3][8] He was also a Fellow of Wolfson College, Cambridge from 1990 to 2007.[3][9] He retire
