Legnani, Pierina (1863–1923)
Pierina Legnani made her debut at La Scala, Milan, and then appeared with some success in Paris, Madrid, and London. It was in Russia, however, that she found fame. While performing with the Imperial Ballet at the Maryinsky Theater in St. Petersburg in 1893, in the ballet The Tulip of Haarlem, she executed 32 consecutive fouettés, for the first time in the history of the Imperial Ballet, earning her the title "Prima Ballerina Assoluta." Legnani remained at the Russian theater for the next eight years, and her
amazing athletic accomplishments spurred Russian dancers to aspire to technical brilliance. Wrote Agnes de Mille : "Legnani could perform an entire thirty-two bar adage on full point standing in the center of the floor without support. Her turn-out was so complete that she could balance a glass of vodka on the flat of her ankle while revolving in second position." While in St. Petersburg, Legnani danced as Odette in Swan Lake; she also appeared in Caterina, Coppélia, The Talisman, The Halt of Cavalry, Blue-beard, Camargo, and Raymond Italian ballerina (1863–1930) Pierina Legnani Pierina Legnani photographed during her tour of London, 1891. Pierina Legnani Milan, Kingdom of Italy Milan, Kingdom of Italy Pierina Legnani (30 September 1863 – 15 November 1930) was an Italian ballerina considered one of the greatest ballerinas of all time. Legnani was born in 1863, in Milan and originally studied with famous ballet dancer Caterina Beretta at La Scala, where she developed her technical expertise. Her professional career took off when she appeared as prima ballerina in the Casati ballet, Salandra, at Alhambra Theatre in London. She was titled prima ballerina for La Scala in 1892, before moving to St Petersburg in 1892, where she reached fame dancing with the Imperial Ballet at the Maryinsky Theatre until 1901. Under the direction of famous ballet choreographer Marius Petipa, Leg The title "Prima Ballerina Assoluta" has only been given to two ballerinas at the Maryinsky Theatre. The first was an Italian, Pierina Legnani. Legnani was a great dancer produced by the La Scala School. Like many of her colleagues, she spent the first part of her career touring Europe, England and the United States. Her greatest success came in Russia, when she introduced 32 fouette turns in her performance of CINDERELLA, which she had done the year before in London. She created the role of Odette/Odile in the revival of SWAN LAKE of 1895. She inserted her fouettes and startled the audience. This feat became an integral part of the ballet. In America we can't imagine Odile without the 32 fouettes, although I have seen Russian dancers substitute piques and chaines for the fouettes. Legnani's retirement in 1901 ended her monopoly of the Russian ballet stage. After retirement, she was for many years an adjudicator of the La Scala examinations. Everyone agreed that, in addition to being a great dancer, she had been a charming and kind person, liked by
