Mexican Environmental Journalists Improve Coverage
Note to our readers:
The Americas Policy Program is pleased to announce the launch of a new series of Citizen Action Profiles on successful grassroots communication projects, supported by the World Association for Christian Communication (WACC). This comprehensive report on environmental reporting in Mexico details the obstacles environmental reporters have faced in bringing to light the severe environmental crises facing the nation and the valiant efforts of a dedicated group of underpaid and under-recognized reporters. Written by long-time Americas contributor Talli Nauman, a pioneer of the movement, it describes not only the problems they face but the strategies they have pursued to achieve important victories.
We are confident that this information will be useful to environmental reporters and movements throughout the hemisphere, as they seek to improve environmental information. Their work constitutes a critical link in the chain between information and citizen action to improve conditions in our communities and save H. Jane was born May 4, 1929, in Grinnell, Iowa, to Elbert Earl and Pauline Anna (Fagle) Keeney. She joins them, her older sister Ada Wilson, her niece Ann Wilson, and the ancestors in the Spirit World. Survivors are her daughter Talli Nauman, who lives with her husband Dahl McLean in the Black Hills; son D. David Nauman, who lives in Wood River Valley, Idaho; former husband Charles Nauman, who lives in Volin, South Dakota; and oldest sister Katherine “Ka” Breckenridge, who lives with her husband Darl in Prescott, Arizona; as well as many other relatives and friends who knew and loved her. One of the first generation in her family line to attend college, H. Jane earned a Fulbright Scholarship and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Iowa in 1951. She took part in the Iowa Mountaineers’ Club, making a first ascent in the McKinley Range of Alaska. She and her friend Joyce Rulon Dean Sheplee Nauman, 99, of Centennial, Colorado, passed away on April 3, 2019 after a long and productive life. Dean was an enthusiastic artist, and completed hundreds of paintings. His subject matter included natural still lifes and landscapes from the mountains and prairies of Colorado and South Dakota to the harbors of New England and the rugged bluffs of the Pacific Ocean; from the streets of Mexico, to the ruins of Europe and Egypt. He worked in a wide variety of mediums and artistic techniques, always pushing the boundaries to create his own unique vision. Many of his paintings are viewable on Facebook. Born September 13, 1919, the middle son of Ralph and Charlotte Nauman on a wheat farm near Gettysburg, South Dakota, Dean developed an early interest in drawing and producing shows for the local neighborhood. He followed his passion, receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts at Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell, South Dakota, also studying one year at the University of Iowa. He began work for a Master of Fine Arts at the Chicago Art Institute. After Graduati
