The way it all started

An encounter between a businessman, David Jarmon, and a young and lovely Canadian student, Tara.
Together, they combined their talents and gave birth to a project: a line of women's ready-to-wear clothing.
While he manages the business, she is in charge of the design and
gives the brand her name and sprit. A brand is born.

Tara Jarmon has fond memories of growing up in Vancouver, but after she visited Paris during a modelling gig in 1980, she said bonjour to the City of Lights permanently. “I was infatuated with the French way of life,” says Jarmon. “I thought the women were so chic and put together.”

Now, Jarmon is in the business of chic, having traded modelling for fashion design in the mid-’80s. With no formal training, she started small. “The first season, I only made four pieces,” she says with a laugh. Now, she has 37 stores across Europe and Asia. In Canada, her lines are carried at Studio Labiri in Toronto, Rococo in Montreal and Gravity Pope in Vancouver
and Edmonton.

What was the inspiration for your spring collection? “I worked around a make-believe scenario called ‘When Loulou Meets Bianca.’ Loulou is a girl from a good family, and Bianca is a flamboyant seductress.”

What’s your favourite fashion film?
“Luis Buñuel’s The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie. It’s pure cool and class.”

Paris-based designer Tara Jarmon was born in Canada and moved to Newport Beach in California during her high school years. She attended University of Southern California for a time, but graduated from the American University of Paris. Jarmon founded her eponymous clothing brand more than two decades ago and there are now 23 free-standing Tara Jarmon boutiques and 80 in-store outlets across Europe and Asia. Tara resides in the French capital with her husband David and their three children. As a businessman David is also the co-founder and manager of the brand, whilst Tara is in charge of the company’s designs, bringing her own refreshing spirit and style to them. They reflect her own fashion values of modernity, elegance, self-confidence and dynamism. In addition to running her company, Tara collaborated with Target Corporation’s Go International line to design a collection of affordable women’s clothing and accessories, in 2006.
