Dan Bricklin is best known for conceiving and co-developing VisiCalc, the trailblazing electronic spreadsheet, while he was a student at the Harvard Business School. VisiCalc is widely credited with helping fuel the early rapid growth of the personal computer industry.
Throughout the years, Mr. Bricklin has served as president of Software Garden, Inc., a small consulting firm and developer of software applications that he founded in 1985. Software Garden’s currently most popular product is Note Taker HD for the Apple iPad, written by Dan and first released in 2010. He is also currently CTO of Alpha Software Corporation.
From 2006 through 2011, Mr. Bricklin worked with social software company SocialText, Inc.Until early 2004, he served as CTO of Interland, Inc., after it acquired his previous company, Trellix Corporation, in 2003. Daniel Singer Bricklin (born July 16, 1951) is an American businessman and engineer who is the co-creator, with Bob Frankston, of VisiCalc, the first spreadsheet program. He also founded Software Garden, Inc., of which he is currently president, and Trellix,[1] which he left in 2004.[2] He currently serves as the chief technology officer of Alpha Software.[3]
His book, Bricklin on Technology, was published by Wiley in May 2009.[4] For his work with VisiCalc, Bricklin is often referred to as "the fatherof the Spreadsheet". He was one of six people spotlighted when the Computer was denoted "Machine of the Year" by Time magazine in 1982.
Early life and education
Bricklin was born in Philadelphia, where he attended Akiba Hebrew Academy. He began his college as a mathematics major, but soon switched to computer science.
