Ramon Ayala born (December 8th. 1945) in Monterrey, Mexico has mastered the artistry accordionist/vocalist/songwriter for over 40 years. Ramon Ayala has defined norteño music with signature songs and definitive instrumental styling that have made him a superstar on both sides of the El Rio Grande.

Ramon, son of local musician Ramon Cobarrubias, began playing his favorite instrument, the accordion when he was six years old. Inspired and supported by his parents, he performed in different public places to help his modest family. His first band experience was a group called Los Jilgueros de Marin, later he joined Los Pavorreales.

As a teenager in the early sixties, Ramon virtually invented modern conjunto music, teaming up with the late bajo sexto guitarist / vocalist Cornelio Reyna to form Los Relampagos del Norte, the duo forged a distinctive sound and compiled a roster of songs that have since been covered by countless artists in contemporary Latin music. Accordionist, vocalist, and songwriter Ramón Ayala is a pioneer of norteño music who has sustained an active recording and performing career for almost half a century. As part of the trail-blazing duo Los Relámpagos del Norte, along with Cornelio Reyna, he defined the modern genre with signature songs and distinctive instrumental styling that have made him a superstar of the genre on both sides of the Rio Grande.

He was born Ramón Covarrubias Garza in the Colonia Argentina of Monterrey, Nuevo León, on December 8, 1945. At age 6, the future “King of the Accordion” learned to play norteño music’s emblematic instrument from his father, Ramón Covarrubias, a local musician. Inspired and supported by his parents, he performed in different public places to help support his modest family. His first band experience was with a group called Los Jilgueros (Goldfinches) de Marin, and he later joined Los Pavorreales (The Peacocks).

Ramon Ayala is an Mexican accordionist and songwriter. Ayala has defined much of modern norteño music with his distinctive accordion playing and lyrics. Though he added electric guitars and drums to his music, it retains a traditional northern ranchera style.

In 1971, however, Cornelio Reyna decided to leave Los Relampagos del Norte and to switch to the mariachi genre. At the time, many music experts felt that Ramón Ayala’s short career was doomed since Cornelio Reyna was the voice of Los Relampagos Del Norte and he was just the accordion player.

Surprisingly enough, Cornelio Reyna’s mariachi career was only mediocre at best. He had been much more popular with Los Relampagos Del Norte than he had been as a new solo mariachi singer. Another version is that at this time Ramón Ayala stole Cornelio Reyna’s wife and that is what led to the bands breaking up.

Ramón Ayala set out to prove that he could make it on his ow
