Paul Gardner Allen (January 21, 1953 – October 15, 2018) was an American businessman, computer programmer, researcher, film producer, explorer, sports executive, investor, author, and philanthropist. He co-founded Microsoft Corporation with his childhood friend Bill Gates in 1975, which was followed by the microcomputer revolution of the 1970s and 1980s. Allen was ranked as the 44th-wealthiest person in the world by Forbes with an estimated net worth of $20.3 billion at the time of his death in October 2018.[2][3]

Despite having made billions of dollars as a result of his computer programming skills, Paul Gardner Allen insisted that he was not a geek. "I wasn’t a nerd," Allen writes in his 2012 autobiography, Paul Allen:Idea Man. "I was just someone who happened to love computers, among many other things" (Allen, p. 49). Co-founder of Microsoft Corp., investor and philanthropist, Allen was ranked in 2012 as the 48th richest person in the world, with an estimated fortune of $14.2 billion. Much of that wealth is in the form of shares of Microsoft, the company he launched with Bill Gates (b. 1955) in 1975. After leaving his full-time role with Microsoft in 1983, Allen invested in a broad range of technology companies, real estate, sports teams, and the arts. He also became one of the country’s leading philanthropists, focusing his efforts on education, the arts, health care, space, and, especially, neuroscience.
