Richard Lovelace was an English poet who wrote in the seventeenth century. He was a Cavalier poet who wrote mostly about love, drinking, and honor. He is also known for his political and military activities on behalf of King Charles I, especially during the English Civil War (1642–1651) between pro-monarchy and pro-parliamentary factions of society.

Lovelace was from a privileged family from the English region of Kent, where his family owned significant property. He also came from a long line of military men. Lovelace’s grandfather was an English knight who fought in Ireland and his father fought for the Stuart royal family in Holland. At age 11, Lovelace enrolled in Sutton's Foundation at Charterhouse School in London. He then received the honorary position of Gentleman Wayter Extraordinary, which gave him access to King Charles I and the queen. He attended Gloucester College at Oxford University until the king and queen intervened to confer a Master of Arts degree on him at 18 years old.

Biography

Richard Lovelace was born in 1618, however, the exact location of his birth is unknown. He was born into a Kentish family, the majority of whom was involved in the military lifestyle. His father, Sir William Lovelace was honored by King James I with knighthood for his service in the Low Countires. Together, Sir William Lovelace and his wife, Anne Barne Lovelace had eight children, with Richard Lovelace being the eldest. When Lovelace was just eleven years old, he attended Sutton’s Foundation at Charterhouse School. He spent five years here before being appointed as a “Gentleman Wayter Extraordinary” to the King. His time spent at the Charterhouse is questioned because there is no record of his attendance due to the fact that he did not need financial assistance to remain a student.

Born on 9 December 1617, Richard Lovelace was one of eight Lovelace family children. As the son of Sir William Lovelace and Anne Barne Lovelace, he came from a family of means. Being landed gentry, Richard Lovelace was 11 when his family paid for him to attend the Sutton's Foundation at Charterhouse School. In 1631, he was given the honorary title 'Gentleman Wayter Extraordinary' to the reigning ruler at the time, King Charles I. It is perhaps because of this that he loyally served the King throughout his life.

By the time Richard Lovelace was 18 years old, he had already received a Master of Arts degree from the University of Oxford. During his time at the university, Lovelace produced almost 200 poems and a play that was performed at his college. Afterwards, he went on to study at the University of Cambridge. It is at Cambridge that he met and went into the service of Lord Goring, after which his life was rife with political turmoil. It was this political trouble that often inspired some of his best work.
