David Adam Segal (born 1979/1980)[1] is an American politician, activist, and writer who was a Democratic member of the Rhode Island House of Representatives, representing District 2 (East Providence and Providence) from 2007 until January 2011. Prior to that, he served as Minority Leader of the Providence City Council from 2003 until 2007, elected at the age of 22 as the first and only member of the Green Party ever elected in Rhode Island. Segal was a candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives in the state's 1st congressional district on September 14, 2010.[2] He serves as the executive director of the online organizing group Demand Progress.

Early life and education

Segal was born in Washington, D.C. He graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in mathematics from Columbia University in 2001.[3] He has served as a fellow at Yale Law School's Information Society Project and at Stanford Law School's Center for Internet and Society.[3][4]

Political career

David R. Segal is Distinguished Scholar-Teacher, Professor of Sociology, and Director of the Center for Research on Military Organization, and faculty affiliate in the Department of Government and Politics, the School of Public Affairs, and the Maryland Population Research Center, at the University of Maryland. He earned his Ph.D. at the University of Chicago (1967), and served on the faculty at the University of Michigan (1966-75). Visiting appointments include James K. Pollock Visiting Research Scholar at the University of Bonn (1971), Guest Scholar at the Brookings Institution (1981-84), Guest Scientist at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (1982-1990), Distinguished Lecturer (1996) and Distinguished Visiting Professor (1988-89) at the United States Military Academy, and S.L.A. Marshall Chair at the U.S. Army Research Institute for the Behavioral and Social Sciences. His research has been supported by the National Science Foundation, the Army Research Institute, the Ford Foundation, and the Rose Foundation.
